  • Ph.D Socio-environmental Assessment and Policy Unit, Dept. Landscape Environment and Planning, Faculty of Environmental Design and Construction, RMIT University, Melbourne. "Looking for Landcare: The Landscape and the Family Farm"
  • M.Sc.-(Distinction) --Agricultural Extension, 1983-4, Reading University, England. "Agricultural Policies and Nutrition Status: A Critical Analysis"
  • B.A., 1978; Diploma in Horticulture, 1974, University of Guelph, Canada.

I am the Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) in the Melbourne School of Land and Environment, and a Senior Lecturer in the School of Resource Management, Melbourne School of Land and Environment, Parkville, University of Melbourne. I have 14 years experience within the amalgamated institution. I have both a teaching and research position within the Faculty; and more recently considerable administrative and managerial commitments.

With a combined educational background in biophysical and social science, I have developed a multi-disciplinary approach to research theory and praxis. The focus of my work to-date is on everyday landscapes and 'ordinary' people. In this pursuit, I have grappled with policy frameworks, planning institutions, resource use and have located these in a landscape context centred on human interaction with 'place'. I research and write on catchment management, Landcare, rural women and landscape policy in particular.

In 2004/5 I have become involved in research around risk management and risk assessment in resource management. As a social scientist working with ecologists, epidemiologists, hydrogeologists and other traditional science disciplines, I am particularly concerned to assure in that stakeholder issues, including their genuine participation in scientific risk assessment are part of our research design and modelling. Projects in this area include: Expert and Community Judgments of Health Risks from Recycled Water with Dr. Louisa Flander (School of Population Health); Hazard identification, risk assessment and decision analysis for conservation and management of Australian marine parks with Dr. Jan Carey, et al (School of Botany); and NPSI Ecological Risk Assessment for Irrigation with Dr. Terry Walshe (Univ. of WA), Dr. Barry Hart (Monash University), Dr. Mark Burgman (Univ. of Melbourne, School of Botany).

In 2005/6 in conjunction with Dr. Sherie McClam in the Faculty of Education, I am involved in researching and analyzing how students from conventional undergraduate disciplines perceive 'nature' and 'the environment'. Our research in this area focuses on the importance of 'place' and 'landscape' in understanding where and how 'nature' and the 'environment' are located. Students involved in this project use reflexive journals and photography as part of their learning program. In addition, Dr. McClam and I are also involved in research that considers how understanding the barriers to multi-disciplinary learning processes can contribute to transforming environmental education.

I am committed to building a research profile and this includes a significant commitment to my graduate students. Through the strategic efforts of myself and two other social science colleagues, the Institute is establishing a national and international reputation in social science. I have effectively managed both campus based and Institute committee memberships. My years in community development support my ability to network and plan for strategic change. My work record indicates my ability to meet deadlines and achieve targets across many tasks.

I have over sixteen years experience working (including six years working in the Pacific and Africa) in community development, formal and non-formal education, gender and social analysis, natural resource management and environment issues, and in developing and implementing horticultural/agricultural extension programs.

My Master of Science degree in Agriculture Extension and Rural Development linked agricultural policy to the household level by developing indicators accessible to family farmers. My PhD involved examining conservation on rural private land in Victoria. I utilized a farmer based photo-elicitation method as part of the research into the meanings and understanding of landscape that farmers evoke when considering and implementing conservation and production regimes.

I have worked as both a short and long-term adviser on a range of AusAID-funded projects; and have researched and written extensively on issues relating to landscape, conservation and environment, community development programs, participatory research methods, gender analysis and women in development, and in agriculture extension.

I am also the Deputy Director of the Office for Environmental Programs at the University of Melbourne. The OEP focuses on environmental education and research. It offers flexible interdisciplinary courses through the Graduate Environmental Program. As Deputy Director, I am involved with the 50-60 academics and 10 faculties that contribute to the program and provide academic advice and counseling to the students enrolled in the OEP.
