The Institute of Melbourne School of Land and Environment, The University of Melbourne. Co-operative Research Centre for Wood Innovations

CRC Wood Innovations contucts groundbreaking research into two major programs: the Microwave Modification of Wood, and High Value-added Wood Products. These programs provide a vital contribution to the development needs of Australia's timber industry and have the potential to revolutionise the wood products and furniture industries.

The CRC Wood Innovations is a cooperative research centre uniting a dynamic group of researchers and industry organisations including:

  • University of Melbourne
  • Swinburne University of Technology
  • Queensland Forest Research Institute
  • WA Forest Products Commission
  • CSIRO
  • Furntech
  • Auspine Pty. Ltd.
  • Australian Solar Timbers
  • Microwood Ptr. Ltd.
  • Furnishing Industry Association of Australia
  • AV Syntech
  • Black Forest Wawmill
  • Treecorp Pty. Ltd

Microwave Modification of Wood

Current wood processing technologies have a number of disavantages arising from the variable nature of wood. Characteristics of wood may vary between species, between trees and within a tree.

Under the influence of intensive microwave radiation it is possible to modify the structure of wood reducing variability and providing improved physical properties and techological attributes.

Our research in microwave modification of wood aims to develop the application and use of microwave technology for timber processing and promote the uptake and commercialisation of microwave technology.
