Melbourne School of Land and Environment offers high quality cartographic and drafting services for research projects, publications, student theses and teaching at very competitive rates.

We produce maps, figures and diagrams to customer specifications using up to date methods and techniques. The full-time Cartographer, Chandra Jayasuriya has extensive experience in all aspects of cartographic work. She is a member of the Mapping Sciences Institute of Australia and a cartography editor of the Journal of Maps. Using advanced software such as ArcGIS, MapInfo, Mirage and Illustrator, data can be converted into a number of forms in both colour and black and white, including:

We offer a complete service, from design through to final product, and provide a fast turnaround. Our cartographer is available for consultation and advice. You are welcome to look at samples of work.

Postgraduate and Honours students can obtain free advice on their cartographic work. PhD and Masters by Research students within the faculty are entitled to one 'free' day of Chandra's expertise over the period of their candidature, and an additional free day for work for contributions to a refereed publication.

Postgraduate and Honours students can also borrow some cartographic tools such as stereoscopes, GPS receivers, planimeters, opisometers and survey equipment from Chandra. Other equipment such as transcribing machines, tape recorders, slide scanner, slide projector and carousels are also available.

Maps

The School maintains a map collection for teaching and research which includes, topographic maps of Australia at 1:50,000, 1:100,000, 1:250,000, 1:1,000,000 and Victoria 1:25,000, World aeronautical charts - 1:1,000,000, some geological maps of Victoria and Melbourne, a limited number of atlases for general reference and some aerial photographs. We also have digital topographic maps - Australia 1:250 000 scale, suitable for GPS and computer mapping. Staff and postgraduate students can borrow these for limited period.
