The University of Melbourne’s School of Land and Environment presents an expert panel discussion, exploring the intricacies of human dependence on forests.

This panel discussion celebrates the centenary of professional forestry education in Australia, and sets the scene for The Future of Forestry and Forest Science Conference to be held from Thursday 30 September to Saturday 2 October at the University of Melbourne, Parkville Campus. Professor Tim FlanneryProfessor Tim Flannery

The 2007 Australian of the Year, he is an internationally acclaimed scientist explorer,
conservationist, best selling author and Chair of the Copenhagen Climate Council. Tim Flannery is a man-on-a-mission.

Dr William JacksonDr William Jackson, Deputy Director General, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)

Dr William Jackson is the Deputy Director General of IUCN. Prior to this appointment he was the Director, Global Programme, and Head of IUCN’s Forest Conservation Programme in HQ, and has worked in IUCN in Eastern and Southern Africa. He has extensive field experience in ecosystem conservation and management around the world. He has a keen interest in promoting the role of civil society in linking forest conservation practice with policy, community forestry, forest fires and forest restoration.

Dr Kevin TolhurstDr Kevin Tolhurst, Melbourne School of Land and Environment

Kevin Tolhurst is Senior Lecturer in Fire Ecology and Management at the University of Melbourne’s School of Land and Environment.

A member of the Department of Forest Ecosystem Science and the Bushfire Cooperative Research Centre, Kevin provides expert advice on fire behaviour and fire suppression strategies at major bushfires. Some recent examples include the Black Saturday fires in Victoria in 2009, and the Great Divide Fires in 2007.

Born in Melbourne. Grew up in Gisborne Victoria.

Attended Mowbray College, Melton Victoria (completed VCE).

Veronica TyquinVeronica Tyquin, Conservation Planner, Forestry Tasmania

Veronica Tyquin hasn’t looked back since completing her Bachelor of Forest Science (Honours) at the University of Melbourne in 2005. She has worked as a Conservation Planner with Forestry Tasmania for the past two years, and previously held roles including Resource Information Officer with Gunns Limited, and Technical Forester with Green Triangle Forest Products. She enjoyed travelling overseas in recent years, briefly visiting forests with local people in Borneo and South Africa.
