Careers in Horticulture
Horticulture is an industry of major importance to the economy of Australia and in particular Victoria, the Garden State. The industry continues to employ many professional and technical people. Recent trends in the demand for horticultural products and services have resulted in the growth of this industry and a large variety of career outcomes.
Careers in the Horticulture:
- Environmental Planning
Landscaping for special purposes such as civic squares and parking areas. Protecting areas of special environment and horticultural importance and regeneration of degraded land. - Landscape Design and Construction
Planning a landscape and then creating it by constructing walls, pergolas, ponds, paths and steps, planting trees and shrubs and installing watering systems. The landscapes could be "interiorscapes" and include plants in shopping centres and hotel foyers. - Parks and Gardens Management
Managing private gardens, shopping centre surrounds, the grounds around schools, universities, hospitals and other institutions, or public gardens and parks. - Flower Production
For export and local florists - Research
Studying cultivation; pest and disease control, or the production, storage and transport of flowers, shrubs and trees. - Retail Nursery and Garden Centre Management
Preparing plants and garden products for sale and giving advice to clients. - Tree Management / Arborist
Making sure the right trees are planted, remain healthy and grow well. As trees age this may involve pruning and shaping or even the removal of diseased and old trees. - Turf Management
Supervising sports fields or golf courses. - Wholesale Nursery
Producing plants for retail nurseries, garden centres and for landscapers.
