Nicole Tranter
Teaching animal management in Wales
Diploma in Animal Management

Photo : Nicole TranterThe rolling, green hills of Wales are a long way from the dry, paddocks of Dookie, but six years after graduating that’s where Nicole Bridgewater (now Tranter) has found herself.
She enjoys teaching students the practical side of farming and animal management to 16-19 year olds studying a Diploma in Animal Management at the Usk campus of the Coleg Gwent.
Nicole says most of the students come from towns so they have had no contact with farm animals before. “It’s been great to see them build up their confidence with handling and management of animals.”

The practical component of subjects at Dookie prepared her well for her future work on farms in England, which at times was pretty gruelling.

“I think the best thing about my degree course was having to work on the vineyard and orchard, the piggery, broadacre, and the dairy. It really helped me be adaptable and flexible when looking for work on farms here in the UK.”
She says the ability to choose electives helped her to keep career options open.
“Rather than just being focussed on plants, or animals, my course was a good mixture of both and the course also gave me the confidence that I could do anything if I put my mind to it.”
Nicole met her future husband Caerwyn, a beef farmer and silage contractor, when he came to bale hay at a farm where she was working. They married in Australia last year.

Duncan McCowan
Cadet with the Department of Primary Industries, Victorian State Government

Bachelor of Animal Science and Management

I've just completed my Bachelors degree in Animal Science and Management.  It's a general course that covers all kinds of animals, and my focus was mainly on the management and production of animals such as you find on farms and are used for wool, dairy products and meat. Sheep, cattle, poultry and animals like that.  We studied things from genetics, to good farm practices, the nutrition, disease and welfare management and how it all works as a business.

I'm currently doing a cadetship with the Department of Primary Industries for the Victorian State Government and am looking forward to exciting prospects from my career.

Tracey Adams
Veterinary Nurse, Knox Bird Veterinary Clinic
Bachelor of Animal Science and Management

I always wanted to work with animals.  I’ve got birds as pets, a galah, a cockatiel and budgies, as well as a dog, cat and rabbit! When I finished high school, I decided that the Bachelor of Animal Science and Management was the best course for me.
In my degree I studied animal behaviour and welfare and now work as a veterinary nurse at the Knox Bird Veterinary Clinic.
