Forestry graduate reaps career rewards at home and overseas
About Lyndall
As a city girl with little hands on experience in the physical aspect of environmental management, Lyndall Bull chose to study a double degree in forestry and environmental science.
"My interest in the environment stems back to a young age and I was looking for a course that provided sound theory, practical experience and rewarding career options."Lyndall is now progressing a career in the domestic and international forest industry. First as as a Forestry Consultant for URS, she divided her time between work in city and rural areas and included a short-term assignment working with villagers in South America. Most recently she has commenced a PhD.
As a student Lyndall found plenty of opportunities for work experience around Australia and overseas. She went to South Africa at the end of her third year and many of her classmates also journeyed overseas to Germany and Canada among other countries.
After University, Lyndall spent six months in Vanuatu as a Youth Ambassador where she spent her time liaising with the local communities and running environmental workshops.
Lyndall's classmates have followed various career paths including genetic research, plantation development and management, native forest management, fire management, consulting and work with the Australian Greenhouse Office.
She says that spending time in the country "where it all happens" is an important part of the preparation for a professional career in forestry.
"I then studied at the Creswick campus and this was a great experience. It provided a huge amount of practical experience and the chance to build lasting friendships with others in the profession," she says. "Studying Forest Science has meant I can travel doing the job I love", says one of the University of Melbourne's recent graduates.
