About John
These were important considerations for John Fitzgibbon, recent Horticulture degree graduate from the University of Melbourne's Burnley campus. John also testifies to the importance of doing a course that offers a good student life and a network of industry contacts, as well as rewarding career options .
John moved from Traralgon to study at the University of Melbourne, wanting to study in a campus that offered close contact with students and lecturers. This led him to a Horticulture degree offered by the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Land and Food Resources at the Burnley campus.
John now runs Metropolitan Tree Growers, a successful business in Melbourne that grows trees to provide municipal councils across south - east Australia.
"It's a career that allows me to work in an area of my own personal interest and a career in which I can continue to develop and become a market leader," he said. "The degree in landscape management gave me a good grounding to build from, providing an understanding of plant science, tree identification, accounting and marketing.After completing his course John worked in the areas of Landscape gardening; Park Management with Melbourne Water; sales and promotion for a tree retailer and wholesaler. Within three years of graduating he started his own business.
Now as an employer in the horticultural industry, John says it is a priority to ensure that his staff have a firm grounding in the horticulture industry.

The Bachelor of Environments with a major in Landscape Management prepares students for a variety of roles in the horticulture industry including horticultural enterprise management and operation, horticultural commerce, sports turf management, horticultural teaching, flower production, arboriculture, rural journalism and broadcasting, and research and development support.
Career pathways include postgraduate options through research (Master of Horticulture, Master of Natural Resource Managementand PhD) and coursework (Master of Urban Horticulture).
For those interested in a shorter undergraduate program, the faculty offers the Associate Degree in Environmental Horticulture, a two year program based at the Burnley campus. A variety of short courses are also offered.

Landscape Management programs make use of the University's Parkville together with the Burnley campus which is situated adjacent to the Burnley Gardens.
